Katie Dunbar received her MFA in Visual Studies from the Pacific Northwest College of Art, and BA in Fine Arts from the University of California Santa Cruz. A few years into her creative career path, she spent over 5 months walking from Mexico to Canada via the Pacific Crest Trail, and has also backpacked to extensive lengths in Montana and New Mexico on the Continental Divide. During these physically and mentally strenuous journeys away from an indoor studio, Dunbar was forced to repetitiously confront and dissect conceptual narratives that are important and meaningful to her, and that reflect in her artistic process. As a result, Dunbar has centered her creative narratives around the natural environment and implies gentle notions of sustainability, conservation, and the wild community outdoors. Dunbar currently highlights these moments in the studio via illustrations and paintings, yet her work also consists of sculptural installations, murals, and social practices.
